Arbitrum and Optimism solved the same problem — Ethereum mainnet gas fees pricing out everyday transactions — with the same basic approach (optimistic rollups), and yet the two ecosystems feel genuinely different to use. If you're deciding where to bridge your ETH, here's what actually differs once you get past the “both are L2s” headline.
The shared foundation
Both are optimistic rollups: they execute transactions off-chain, post compressed transaction data back to Ethereum mainnet for security, and assume transactions are valid unless someone submits a fraud proof during a challenge window. That challenge window is why withdrawing directly back to Ethereum mainnet through either network's native bridge takes about 7 days — it's not a bug, it's the security model giving anyone time to dispute a fraudulent state root. Both also inherit Ethereum's base-layer security rather than running their own independent validator set, which is the core tradeoff optimistic rollups make against sidechains like Polygon PoS.
Where they actually diverge
Ecosystem structure. Optimism open-sourced its rollup tech as the OP Stack, and an entire “Superchain” of separate chains now runs on it — Base (Coinbase's L2), Zora, Mode, and others — all sharing tooling and, eventually, interoperability standards. Arbitrum's answer is Arbitrum Orbit, letting projects launch their own Arbitrum-based chain, plus Arbitrum Nova as a separate lower-cost chain for gaming/social use cases. Practically: Optimism's strategy has produced more visible, independently-branded chains (Base in particular has significant volume); Arbitrum's single main chain (Arbitrum One) has stayed the dominant hub for DeFi activity.
DeFi depth. Arbitrum One has consistently carried the larger DeFi footprint of the two by total value locked, per DefiLlama's tracking — GMX (perpetuals trading) and Camelot DEX are Arbitrum-native and don't have a real Optimism equivalent with the same volume. Optimism's DeFi scene leans on Velodrome (a ve(3,3) DEX) and Synthetix, plus whatever volume Base pulls in as a separate but OP Stack-aligned chain. If your priority is the deepest DeFi liquidity and the widest range of native protocols, Arbitrum has generally had the edge.
Governance and funding philosophy. This is the most genuinely different part. Optimism runs Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RetroPGF) — rounds where the Optimism Collective funds projects and contributors AFTER they've proven useful to the ecosystem, using OP token allocations, rather than funding proposals upfront. Arbitrum's DAO (governed by ARB token holders) runs a more conventional grants-and-proposal treasury model. Neither is objectively better, but RetroPGF is a distinctive, closely-watched experiment in public-goods funding that Arbitrum doesn't really have an equivalent to.

Fees and speed in practice
Day-to-day, both networks charge a fraction of Ethereum mainnet gas — routine swaps and transfers on either typically run a few cents rather than the several-dollars-to-tens-of-dollars mainnet can hit during congestion. Neither has a structural fee advantage over the other worth choosing a chain for on its own; network congestion on either can push costs up briefly, but the baseline is similar. The bigger practical cost difference is bridging: the native 7-day withdrawal applies to BOTH chains if you go through their official bridge back to mainnet. Third-party liquidity bridges like Hop Protocol or Across get you funds back on mainnet (or onto the other L2 directly) in minutes instead of a week, for a small fee — worth it if you need liquidity back quickly, unnecessary if you're not in a hurry.
Which one should you actually use
If you're chasing the deepest native DeFi liquidity and want access to GMX-style perpetuals trading or Camelot's incentive structure, Arbitrum is the more mature single-chain hub. If you're drawn to Coinbase's Base ecosystem, want exposure to the OP Stack's growing multi-chain network, or care about supporting RetroPGF's public-goods model, Optimism (and its Superchain) is the more interesting long-term bet. Realistically, most active DeFi users end up bridging assets to both rather than picking one — the bridging cost is small enough that chain-exclusivity rarely makes sense once you're moving more than a token or two.

The honest downside both chains share
Neither chain is as decentralized as “Ethereum L2” marketing sometimes implies. Both currently run on a single, centralized sequencer — Offchain Labs for Arbitrum, the OP Labs/Optimism Foundation for Optimism — meaning one entity orders and processes transactions before they're settled to mainnet. That sequencer can theoretically censor or reorder transactions in the short term, and if it goes down, the chain can stall for users even though funds remain provably safe via the mainnet settlement layer (this has happened briefly on both networks during past outages). Both teams have published decentralized-sequencer roadmaps — Arbitrum's BOLD upgrade moved toward permissionless validators for fraud proofs, and Optimism's fault-proof and multi-client rollout are working toward the same goal — but as of now, trusting either chain still means trusting a single operator not to misbehave during the brief window before mainnet settlement, on top of trusting the rollup's cryptographic security model.

Is Arbitrum or Optimism more secure?
Both use the same optimistic-rollup security model with a 7-day fraud-proof challenge window and inherit Ethereum mainnet's base security. Neither has a meaningfully different security track record as a rollup design; incidents on either side have generally involved individual dApps, not the rollup layer itself.
What's the difference between Optimism and Base?
Base is a separate chain built BY Coinbase ON the OP Stack — it's part of the Superchain vision but has its own sequencer, its own ecosystem, and isn't the same chain as OP Mainnet (Optimism's own chain). They share the underlying tech, not the same network.
Do I need the native token (ARB or OP) to use either chain?
